What do all these Terms Mean… Mr. Internet?

Here’s a quick lesson on Internet Terminology.

You hear it all the time and most of it you probably know, but in case you have any misconceptions or misunderstandings, here are some terms used and here is what they mean.

URL

Stands for Universal Resource Locator

This is the Web Page Address or Website Address

Examples:
https://mission-computers.com
www.google.com

IP Address

Stands for Internet Protocol Address

This is the address the internet uses to send information to your computer.

Just like you have a home address for your house so that the mailman knows where to go, your computer has an IP address so the email-man knows where to go…

There is a lot more to it than that, but this is the basic jist of an IP address

The Web

Also known as the World Wide Web or the Internet or The Net.

Some even call it the Information Highway,

Domain (Domain Name)

This is the address the internet uses to access a website.

A Domain name is what comes after the @ sign in an email address.

A Domain name is also what comes after the www. Or https:// for a web address.

Examples:
mission-computers.com
google.com

Web Browser

Also known as a Browser

This is the program used to access the Internet.

You cannot be on the internet without being on a browser.

Examples:
Chrome,
Internet Explorer,
Firefox,
Safari,
Edge,
Mozilla
